Abstract: In the tropical forest zone nutrients are often in short supply and it can be said that land use is only sustainable if the nutrient level is balanced. In order to provide necessary elements for designing sustainable cropping systems in the Taï region, the nutrient balance of a 117 ha catchment area in undisturbed forest was studied in detail in the project 'Gross inputs and outputs of nutrients in undisturbed forest'. The study concluded that the Taï forest is undergoing a net loss of nutrients, but the question remains to what extent the weathering rock layer and the subsequent leaching contributes to the output levels of minerals. This result indicates that possibilities for wood harvesting, even by selective cutting, are limited. Moreover, given the low nutrient status of the soils, sustainable agriculture in the surrounding deforested areas will be possible only if fertilisers are applied.
